A Quiet Moment in the Fog

Independence Day began with people wearing numbers on their backs walking really quickly past the gallery on the sidewalk. As I mopped up the residue of wine from last night's opening, the runners came past, on their way to the finish line of the annual 10K race. Later, Main Street turned very quiet, emptying of people who migrated over to Deer Isle to watch the parade. The quiet was a relief after yesterday's ten straight hours of chatting with gallery visitors
All of this happened within a dense fog. For about 17 days now, we've had mostly overcast, rainy and foggy weather. Everyone complains, but hey, that's the coast of Maine. I've enjoyed it, and it brings people into the gallery. The fog rolls around, so occasionally we'll see the other islands, occasionally not. Now it's turning bright; somewhere above this fog, the sun is shining.

Last night's opening for Emily Brown's Paper Holds Water show was well-attended, with visitors making their way among the other galleries and studios on the First Friday gallery walk. Today, the 4th, is usually busier than I like, but so far I'm having a quiet morning. As the Fish & Fritter Fry and other activities on the Fish Pier start though, downtown tends to become mobbed. And if the fog disperses by tonight, we'll have fireworks.
