5/27: Wendy Turner, Philip Koch

We're back to our full-time summer hours and we've heard rumours of other local galleries opening their doors. One such opening took place at the Deer Isle Artists Association. Volunteers put together a fundraising show called "Art Postcards from Away", which solicited contributions from near and far, receiving nearly 700 entries of mailed 4" x 6" art. Like all DIAA shows, the work was non-juried, so the range was very broad. Part of the fun was seeing how the artists responded to the challenge in such different ways. I'm glad someone else put this show together; the hanging alone took two days.
Here at Isalos, we've recently received work from two painters who are new to us: Philip Koch and Wendy Turner. Their work includes several large-scale paintings, so the gallery is quite transformed. I'll have more on them here soon.

5/20: Birds, Boats & Barnacles

We re-opened on Friday. We might not have rushed it if it were not for the Wings, Waves & Woods birding weekend, but if we didn't have a deadline, it could have taken weeks to get the gallery back into shape. We didn't have high hopes for the birding event as far as drawing huge crowds, and, well, it didn't. Good excuse to get our act together, though. We hung bird art by Jacqueline Wilson, Lorraine Lans, Frederica Marshall, Jennifer Lee Morrow, Siri Beckman, and Wendy Turner. In addition, we hung non-bird work by our other gallery artists, including some newcomers, like sculptor Maureen Mainen. I'm greatly relieved to have the gallery back together.

5/15: First Show of the Season

Last weekend the Deer isle - Stonington High School art show took place in the gallery, the second time we've hosted it. We didn't have to do much except get all the art stored or moved, and take Rebecca's nearly-finished kayak somewhere else. The variety of work and profusion of bright colors made it an interesting and fun show.

One thing I like about the show, is that I don't have to stay. Here I am, heading out to dinner. And when the show is over, the gallery starts over, empty and clean. This week we're patching and painting walls, building pedestals for new work, getting new work... all the fun before the busy season starts. By Friday much of the gallery wil be hung with a collection of bird-related art, which coincides with the Wings, Waves & Woods birding event this weekend.
5/10: Empty Cradle

The gallery has been transformed from a gallery/studio/boatshop into the high school students' art show, which opens tomorrow evening. The kayak had to leave her cradle a bit prematurely, however in one piece and looking pretty nice.
