10/18: More kayaking snapshots

kayak-061015.jpg

On Sunday morning we chose to kayak less and walk more. We stopped on Russ Island, which is right across the thoroughfare from Stonington and walked around a bit. It's amazing what a different world it is- right in view of the teeming metropolis across the water.

On Monday we got out of work a little early and took a longer paddle out to Enchanted Island.

I could lie and tell you that my shadow on the  granite is an intentional self-portrait. I think the photo would  be better without it. Guess I'll have to go back.

10/17: The Day of The Living Accordions

accordion-1.jpg

Well, someone else blogged it before I could, but here's a couple of my photos from Saturday's Squeeze-In at the Opera House. What's my accordion story? Well, I guess I've had my little Singin' Sailor accordion for quite awhile. I bought it at an auction because I liked the way it looks. I've had it for years and never really played, so when the fourth annual Maine Squeeze-In came to Stonington, I just had to go. Did I learn to play accordion in one day? No, but I have learned a far greater appreciation for those who do it well. Sort of like my relationship to fine art.

One of the day's highlights was when the accordionists marched down Main Street, treating town to a symphony of accordions.

If accordions all day wasn't enough, on Saturday night The Chad Huval Cajun Band played at the Opera House. Those dancing muscles are still aching.

10/10: Stonington Harbor Tug & Barge Incident

barge1.jpg

Here's a few more photos of Sunday's events in the harbor. The tugboat had been stuck beneath the barge, but a couple of lobster boats pulled it out- unfortunately, not all in one  piece.

As the tide went out, environmental clean-up crews worked to contain the fuel spill.

They used what appeared to be big, super-absorbant paper towels to mop up the oil.

By the end of the day, everything seemed to be under control. Despite the damaged equipment, the dredging crew is back to work.
