10/31: What's Vaino Up To?

This is Vaino Kola's work in progress. It's 3 x 8 feet, and as usual, a huge undertaking. He's been at it for awhile, and obviously has awhile to go, but it's easy to see that it will be an amazing painting. Unfortunately, we won't see this one in the gallery- it's a commission, but it's always interesting to take a peek into his studio and see what he's up to. Hopefully by springtime we'll have an update on what he'll have for the gallery next year.

10/12: Stormy Friday

A frequently-asked question is "How long do you stay open?" or something to that effect. It's one of  those answers that I give automatically: we never really close, we just stop keeping scheduled hours. Rebecca sets-up her studio over there, we hang some art over here, and if people put their noses up to the window we might let them in.

Might... as in, put your credit card up against the glass and we'll do a background check on you first  (remind me to tell you about the guy who was stalking me this summer, trying to get a painting cheap).

Ah, so when does that happen?

Well, tomorrow is the last regular day. I'm taking Sunday off.  Next week I'll be doing some shipping and other odds and ends. Then I'll probably rebuild some of our storage and moveable walls. In November we'll come-up with next year's line-up, and then maybe we'll have some sort of small show for Thanksgiving weekend. After that I, along with most of Stonington's other theme park characters, will be cryogenically frozen until next summer.

Here's a new one from Rebecca:

10/6: Isalos After Hours Club

Last night: our last First Friday of the  season. We received some new work, which includes encaustics by Marion Fishman, pastels from Carolyn Caldwell and some Frederica Marshall sumi-e paintings. Rebecca finished three new Roadwork paintings... and made the food. It is a bit like a pot-luck, I guess. I brought  the  wine.

At her studio, Siri Beckman started the evening with a wood engraving demonstration, which was well-attended (and accounts for a slow start to our evening). I looked at the big platter of vegetables and dip and remarked that we'd probably have enough leftovers for a stir-fry or two. Traffic picked-up though,  and we had a good steady crowd for  several hours- maybe a quarter of the visitors we'd get for a summer opening, but that's not bad for October.

As often happens, as other galleries & studios closed, the artists came here. The music got louder, the wine flowed and the food disappeared. Maybe pot-luck isn't the right comparison: it's more like an after-hours club. I think we might have even sold some art. So much  for our stir-fry.

It's that time of year again- that's right: the Peninsula Potter's Tour. This year it happens to coincide with our First Friday Open Gallery Night. As the sign promises, we have new  art, and plenty of cheese.
