Barbara Sullivan

sullivan-yellow-chair.jpg Barbara Sullivan is a sculptor living in Solon, Maine. She studied art at the Concept School of Art, Montserrat School of Art, University of Maine - Farmington, and Vermont College. She teaches at the University of Maine - Farmington.

Sullivan’s medium of choice is fresco. She builds up the shape with layers of plaster, then paints into the wet plaster, making paint and plaster a solid entity. Her subjects are household items drawn from everyday life: an Electrolux vacuum, wingback chairs, condiments out of the kitchen, rendered with a somewhat wavy perspective, so the items appear as whimsical iconic caricatures of themselves.

Included in the 2003 and 2005 Portland Museum of Art Biennials, Sullivan’s work hangs in the museum’s permanent collection, as well as at the Hudson Museum at the University of Maine - Orono. She has been exhibiting her work in numerous shows since 1972.
